The USS George Washington aircraft carrier reached the Middle East on Wednesday as part of a planned deployment to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the George Washington Carrier Strike Group was operating in the region and had entered CENTCOM’s area of responsibility a day earlier. The command also shared a photograph showing fighter jets on the carrier’s deck as it transited the Arabian Sea.
Allegations aboard the Lincoln and official rebuttals
Following the USS Abraham Lincoln’s lengthy deployment linked to the war with Iran, allegations emerged that the ship had experienced serious mental health problems and structural issues.
Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal sought answers from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao about the sustainability of the current deployment model.
Blumenthal raised concerns about supply shortages, possible water contamination, plumbing failures, worsening mental health, security concerns and serious mail disruptions that caused care packages to be held up in transit.
US officials, however, rejected accounts portraying living conditions aboard the aircraft carrier as poor and disputed the seriousness of the allegations.
George Washington’s mission in the region
Based in Yokosuka, Japan, the George Washington was deployed to support the region as the US Navy’s only aircraft carrier permanently stationed overseas.
