U.S. rapper Macklemore, who supports the Palestinian people, announced that he will launch the “Free Palestine Tour” while calling on artists to use their stages for social issues.
In a statement on his social media account, Macklemore said that events in recent weeks had shown that some things had changed over the past three years. He said there had been a collective awakening over the liberation of Palestine, the power of billionaires seeking to censor calls for it, and what is expected of artists.
The tour will begin in Dublin, Paris and London
Macklemore said he had been in contact with artists who use their stages in solidarity with the Palestinian people despite the consequences they may face. He plans to hold the first events in three European cities.
The first concerts are planned for Dublin on Oct. 26, Paris on Oct. 29 and London on Oct. 30. Macklemore announced that all proceeds from the concerts would be donated to organizations supporting the Palestinian people. Other details of the event are still being finalized.
Macklemore calls on artists to take a political stance
Describing the events in Gaza as “genocide,” Macklemore argued that remaining apolitical was ineffective. He said artists should use their stages not only for entertainment but also for social issues.
The rapper said efforts to silence calls for “Free Palestine” must be opposed. Macklemore said the issue was bigger than any one artist or stage, adding that everyone should pay attention if billionaires can decide which voices appear on stage and which are considered too dangerous to be heard.
He was removed from concerts on Ed Sheeran’s tour
Macklemore was removed from the remaining concerts on singer Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour after messages supporting Palestine. Following the decision, Sheeran’s other opening acts also announced that they would withdraw from the tour.
Sheeran, who owns the tour, had been criticized for remaining largely silent about developments in Gaza. The decision to remove Macklemore from the tour prompted reactions from many people on social media.
He donated the proceeds from “Hind’s Hall 2” to UNRWA
The Grammy-winning rapper has voiced his support for Palestine in various public statements since 2023. Macklemore donated the proceeds from the song “Hind’s Hall 2,” which he produced with Palestinian artists, to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
