Threatening messages targeting Canada’s Muslim community were sent to nine schools affiliated with the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC). Police units launched an investigation into the incident through hate-crime teams.
The email, signed “Citizen Vigilante,” said that Muslims would be killed and that Canada would be “cleansed” of Islam.
MAC spokesperson Nabil Sultan said the same anonymous message had reached schools in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec within 24 hours. Private security guards were hired following the threats to ensure students’ safety.
Police forces in the provinces are conducting the investigation through hate-crime units. Ontario police said they were aware of the hate-motivated email targeting Islamic institutions and had increased patrols around mosques and schools.
Ottawa police said the number of officers deployed in the areas that received the threatening messages had been increased. Police said they had so far found no indication of a “concrete or imminent threat.”
Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangari said every child has the right to be educated in a safe environment. Anandasangari said families should feel safe when sending their children to school and described the threats as unacceptable.
According to Statistics Canada data, anti-Muslim hate crimes reported to police in the country increased by more than 170 percent between 2020 and 2024.
