Türkiye’s new ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ferhat Alkan, officially began his duties in the capital, Mogadishu, at a time marking 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Somalia.
In a message marking the start of his tenure, Alkan said he felt great pride and happiness at beginning his work as Türkiye’s ambassador to Somalia during what he described as an important period in the history of relations between the two countries.

The Turkish ambassador noted that this year also marks the 15th anniversary of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s historic visit to Somalia in 2011, which represented a significant milestone in relations between Ankara and Mogadishu.
Alkan said Türkiye would continue supporting Somalia’s efforts in security and development and strengthening institutional capacities, stressing that relations between the two countries are based on mutual respect, trust and shared interests.

In one of his first engagements after taking office, Alkan met a group of Somali young people at a café in the capital, Mogadishu, and listened to their views on conditions in the city and relations between Türkiye and Somalia.
The ambassador said the young people he met expressed satisfaction with the improvement in security conditions and stability in Mogadishu and its surrounding areas in recent years.

60 years of Türkiye-Somalia relations
Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Somalia date back six decades, while cooperation between the two countries expanded significantly in the years following Erdoğan’s visit to Mogadishu in 2011.
The current partnership covers multiple areas, including security and defense, education, health, development, infrastructure and humanitarian aid.
Alkan stressed that his goal during his tenure would be to advance Türkiye-Somalia relations to a higher level in a way that serves the well-being and interests of the peoples of both countries.
He also said that the doors of Türkiye’s embassy in Mogadishu would remain open to Turkish citizens and Somali friends, emphasizing the importance of listening to their views and suggestions in the coming period.
Before being appointed as the new ambassador in Mogadishu, Alkan served as Türkiye’s ambassador to Mozambique, succeeding Ambassador Alper Aktaş.
