Masrour Barzani, prime minister of the Iranian Kurdistan Regional Government, said the timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq coincides with a period of heightened regional security risks. Barzani said the September 30 deadline set for the withdrawal could increase threats, particularly for Iraqi Kurdistan, and said his administration must not be left vulnerable to attacks.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Barzani said it was unacceptable to leave them on their own without an adequate defense system.
"We are weak and exposed to attacks. Leaving us alone without an adequate defense system is, one could say, shameful."
Warning over armed groups
Barzani said the refusal of armed groups close to Iran to lay down their weapons could weaken Iraq’s federal structure. He argued that this could also jeopardize the autonomy won by the Kurds.
Barzani said Iraqi Kurdistan would be left vulnerable to threats if the war between the United States and Iran continued, adding that security risks had increased alongside the U.S. withdrawal timetable.
Coalition headquarters to close on September 30
The office of Iraqi Armed Forces Commander Abdul Amir al-Shammari announced that the headquarters from which the U.S.-led international coalition forces began their withdrawal would close on September 30.
The Iraqi government declared an official holiday at all public institutions from September 30 to October 3 because of the coalition forces’ withdrawal. As part of the departure, air defense systems stationed in Erbil will also be removed from the region.
