A traffic accident on the war-damaged infrastructure in Syria claimed dozens of lives. A bus carrying Internal Security Forces personnel and another bus with civilian passengers collided violently on the Deir ez-Zor-Damascus highway.
According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, at least 35 people were killed and 30 injured in the accident that occurred in the area between Sukhnah and Palmyra. The ministry said ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
According to the state news agency SANA, several helicopters were sent to the area to evacuate the wounded. The injured were taken to Homs Military Hospital for treatment.
Impact of the prolonged war on infrastructure
The Deir ez-Zor-Damascus highway, where the accident occurred, is known to have low safety standards after nearly 14 years of civil war, reflecting the generally poor state of civilian infrastructure in Syria.
Disaster Management and Emergency Response Minister Raed al-Saleh stressed in a statement last October that more than 2,000 traffic accidents occurred in the country between January and the end of September, and that these accidents are among the leading causes of death.
