The Democratic Republic of Congo has announced an acceleration in the spread of the Ebola virus. Health officials reported growing concerns about the outbreak following the recording of 71 new confirmed cases in recent hours.
The total number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 452. The confirmed death toll has been reported as 82.
The increase in cases is mainly concentrated in the Ituri region in the northeast of the country. Weak health infrastructure and ongoing security issues are complicating response efforts.
It was reported that 65 of the new cases were detected in Ituri, while six cases were identified in North Kivu. These figures represent the highest daily increase since the current wave of the outbreak began.
The Ministry of Health stated that the numbers in these regions indicate rapid and sustained community transmission. Officials warned that if control and surveillance measures are not strengthened, the disease could spread to a wider area.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also announced a six-month response plan. The approximately $518 million plan aims to support efforts to control the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and to enhance preparedness for potential cases in neighboring countries.
Ituri, the epicenter of the outbreak, stands out as a region with limited health capacity and high security pressure. This situation makes case tracking, contact tracing, and rapid response even more critical.
