FIFA President Gianni Infantino's senior American advisor, Cordeiro, has resigned in strong opposition to the plan to open the World Cup to investors. Cordeiro announced his decision in a letter sent to Sky News.
In his letter, Cordeiro stated that Infantino's proposal to privatize the World Cup endangered FIFA's future, and announced he was leaving his advisory role after five years. "This proposal has become a matter that will determine FIFA's future. After careful consideration, I have decided that I cannot continue in my role as senior advisor to the FIFA President, and therefore I am resigning effective immediately," he said.

Cordeiro stressed that FIFA's main duty is to protect football, not to make profit. Reminding that the organization has billions of dollars in reserves and no debt, the former advisor noted that the FIFA President had said $15 billion in revenue was generated in the 2022-2026 period.
"If member federations believe additional investment is needed for the development of football, FIFA already has the financial strength to cover it with its existing resources," Cordeiro said. "Under these conditions, selling a permanent stake in football's most valuable asset for $4.2 billion makes no sense."
