Former Colombian President Petro criticized the government’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, arguing that the region belongs to Syria.
In a statement on his X account, Petro said that most Colombians believe the Golan Heights belong to Syria. He added that the vast majority of humanity also believes the region has always belonged to Syria.
The Colombian government under Abelardo de la Espriella announced on August 10 that it recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
Petro also shared Qatar’s statement condemning the decision and said that, as Colombia’s former president, he apologized to Arab countries and to people of the Islamic faith, which he respects.
Petro alleges interference in elections
Petro also alleged that Israel interfered in Colombia’s elections and used software to alter the will of the people. He claimed that this interference, with the support of the Israeli and U.S. governments, enabled Abelardo de la Espriella to come to power.
Petro lost the June 21 election to Espriella and challenged the election results in court. The former president also alleged during this process that an Israeli private company played a role in the election, claiming that the company Black Cube provided the Bautista brothers with algorithms and other support.
Petro’s statement also alleged that the lobbying firm Balart was hired for millions of dollars to improve Abelardo de la Espriella’s public image and persuade Donald Trump to offer his support.
Espriella is described as a 48-year-old lawyer and millionaire businessman known for his proximity to Donald Trump.
