In an interview with Al Jazeera, Syrian President Ahmed Shara drew attention to the risks Lebanon's situation poses for Syria. Shara said any chaos that emerges in Lebanon will directly affect Syria.
Emphasizing that Syria has no intention of military intervention in Lebanon, Shara said they were working with the Lebanese government on solutions that would help the country find a secure way out.
Need for a comprehensive strategy
Shara noted that the crisis in Lebanon cannot be resolved through security measures alone, adding that they were trying to develop a multidimensional and comprehensive strategy. The Syrian president said they support that the state should be the sole authority regarding the use of arms and decisions on war and peace in Lebanon.
Expressing concern over the spread of war in the region, Shara said that escalating tensions would benefit no one.
Security agreement efforts with Israel
Underscoring that they are avoiding conflict with Israel, Shara stated that such a conflict would not serve Syria's interests. Shara said, "We are working, with the participation of a group of countries, to reach a security agreement with Israel. A successful security agreement with Israel could lay the groundwork for comprehensive peace without Syria giving up its right over the occupied Golan Heights."
Military base talks with Russia
Ahmed Shara added that the talks with Russia on the future of military bases in Syria have not yet concluded.
