Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a written statement on the United States’ new sanctions against Iran, calling on all countries to refrain from enforcing them.
The statement argued that the sanctions violated the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights, regardless of their name or scope. The ministry therefore described the sanctions as entirely unlawful and unjust.
Call not to recognize the sanctions’ consequences
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also called on governments not to recognize or approve consequences arising from actions contrary to the sanctions. The statement said all countries were obliged to refrain from enforcing the sanctions in question.
The statement argued that joining the United States’ unilateral sanctions would help Washington impose its will on other states, adding that these measures disrupted countries’ legitimate economic and trade relations.
Iran signals response to the US and Israel
The ministry said Iran would use all means at its disposal to defend itself against the economic war and threats posed by the United States and Israel. The statement signaled that Iran’s administration could take economic and political measures in response to the sanctions.
The US administration had previously announced what it called “the most crushing” sanctions package in history against Iran and threatened third countries cooperating with Iran with sanctions as well.
