The ban in Iran sent Bahrami abroad
Bahrami said tennis was banned in Iran and the courts were closed nearly 50 years ago. Saying it was difficult for him to stay away from tennis, Bahrami said he left Iran and continued playing tennis abroad.
Bahrami said he was happy to be invited to exhibition matches in cities around the world and described his ability to meet people on the court today as the result of his love of tennis.
Bahrami, who played in the doubles final at the 1989 French Open, said he had competed on major tennis courts around the world, including Flushing Meadows, Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open. He said being in Ankara was special to him.
“I don’t want to play tennis without spectators”
Known for his entertaining style on court, Bahrami said the connection he forms with spectators is at the center of his approach to tennis. Saying spectators are the main reason he plays tennis, Bahrami said he enjoys entertaining people and performing in front of crowds.
Bahrami also played tennis with children at the event in Ankara and was pleased by the young athletes’ interest.
“Enjoy the game”
Bahrami stressed that enjoying what one does is as important in sport as success. Saying players should do everything they can to improve, Bahrami said being the world number one or occupying a lower position in the rankings is not decisive on its own.
Bahrami said not everyone can be number one and advised athletes to give their best and enjoy the game while playing tennis.
