As part of ongoing anti-corruption operations in Iraq, the judiciary seized over $11 million in cash and 45 kilograms of gold in two separate investigations. According to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council, the investigations are ongoing and many suspects are in custody.
The Oil Ministry Undersecretary's Case
One of the focal points of the operation is the investigation into Adnan al-Jumaili, the former Undersecretary of the Oil Ministry for Liquidation Affairs. Following al-Jumaili's detention, searches in Salahaddin province uncovered 13 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $9.9 million) and $400,000 in cash hidden in various locations.
40 gold bars and 5 kilograms of gold jewelry
In the same searches, 40 gold bars each weighing 1 kilogram and various gold jewelry totaling 5 kilograms were seized. The Supreme Judicial Council stated that the investigation is continuing to trace all proceeds of the crime and identify other individuals involved.
$873,000 recovered in first investigation
According to the council's statement, 1,143,847,719 Iraqi dinars (approximately $873,000) were recovered in the first case related to financial fraud and illegal money transfers abroad. It was emphasized that legal proceedings are ongoing against companies that damaged public property.
Campaign expands
This operation is part of an intensive anti-corruption campaign that has been underway in Iraq for weeks. As part of the campaign, dozens of people, including lawmakers and senior officials, have been detained; some have had their immunities lifted.
Adnan al-Jumaili was arrested on June 2 after being dismissed from his post on suspicion of wasting public property and signing illegal contracts. Part of the investigation is proceeding based on al-Jumaili's statements.
