Israeli state television KAN announced that Israel refused to renew the water agreement with Jordan. The agreement, based on the peace treaty between the two countries, provided Jordan with 100 million cubic meters of water annually.
According to KAN's report, the agreement, which expired about 8 months ago, has not yet been renewed and is not expected to be signed soon. Israeli officials said the situation has caused anger in Jordan and that the Amman administration could take retaliatory steps. However, no official reason was given for why Israel did not renew the agreement.
While no official statement has yet come from Jordan, the country's state television Al-Mamlaka announced in February that the government had prepared an alternative plan to end additional water purchases from Israel. The plan aims to maintain water security independently of external pressures.
An unnamed Jordanian official who spoke to Israeli state television said, "The water issue is extremely important to us and is also part of the peace agreement." KAN assessed that this statement reflects Jordan's discomfort with Israel turning the water file, which had long been kept away from political disputes, into a bargaining chip.
Under the current agreement, Israel transfers 100 million cubic meters of water to Jordan annually, instead of the 50 million cubic meters stipulated in the peace treaty. In return, electricity is produced in Jordan for Israel.
Israel's war on Gaza, which began in October 2023, was decisive in the failure to renew the agreement. The agreement was suspended as political tensions between the two countries escalated. Jordan's rejection of Israel's calls to expel Palestinians from Gaza and ongoing protests in the country against the war are also among the factors increasing tensions.
