In a statement on Saturday, the Israeli military claimed that its attacks over the past two days in Lebanon, which resulted in dozens of deaths, were carried out in response to Hezbollah's 'clear violations'.
Israeli Claims
According to the Israeli military's written statement, 'Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets at operating forces in southern Lebanon last night.' The army assessed this action as 'a repeated violation of the ceasefire agreement.'
The statement noted that Israeli forces conducted airstrikes targeting dozens of Hezbollah infrastructure sites, rocket launch positions, weapons depots, and command centers.
The Israeli military claimed it 'will not accept any targeting of Israeli civilians or soldiers in any form,' and stated it would continue to work to 'eliminate any threat' in accordance with the directives of the political leadership.
Hezbollah's Statement
Hezbollah, in a statement published the same day, announced it had adhered to the ceasefire since Friday evening. The statement expressed that Israel had violated the ceasefire 'from its very first moments.'
'Despite its violation of the ceasefire, we maintained the ceasefire against the enemy,' the statement said, adding, 'While committed to the ceasefire, we will never hesitate to confront the enemy's attempts at land grabs and expanding occupation. Our mujahideen are on standby in full readiness.'
According to data from Lebanese officials, approximately 80 people lost their lives in the intensified Israeli attacks on Lebanon on Friday and Saturday.
Background
These developments are occurring despite the ceasefire agreement that has been in effect since April 17, 2026, and was extended by Washington until early next July. Israel and Hezbollah blame each other for violating the agreement.
The 14-point war cessation agreement, whose text was published by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, was signed between Washington and Tehran on Wednesday evening. The first article of the agreement stipulates that Iran and the US and its allies immediately and permanently end military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
According to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israel's large-scale attacks on Lebanon since March 2, 2026, have resulted in 3,980 deaths, 12,001 injuries, and more than 1 million people displaced.
