More than 180 representatives of the Jewish community have supported American actor and director Mark Ruffalo in the controversy that followed his description of the treatment of Palestinians as “complicity in genocide.”
On August 21, Ruffalo used the phrase to describe the agreement between Paramount and Warner Bros. Paramount accused the actor of using a commercial dispute to resort to antisemitic tropes.
An open letter published after the accusations said that the antisemitism allegations directed at Ruffalo “weaponized antisemitism in a dangerous and unlawful manner.”
The connection between Gaza and Hollywood
The signatories said they considered Ruffalo’s highlighting of Israel’s influence in the context of the agreement important. They argued that pointing to the connection between events in Gaza and those in Hollywood was the opposite of antisemitism and said it was a moral duty for Jews.
Pointing to the important connection between events in Gaza and those in Hollywood is the exact opposite of antisemitism. As Jews, this is our moral duty.
The statement described the antisemitism allegations against the actor as a “smear campaign.”
The letter also expressed support for Mark Ruffalo and for honest people who show the courage to speak the truth to powerful individuals.
