Nabil Fahmi officially assumed the post of Secretary-General of the Arab League. In a ceremony held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, Fahmi took over from his predecessor Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
According to a written statement by the Arab League, the ceremony was attended by deputy secretaries-general and secretariat officials.
After the transfer of authority, Fahmi received a briefing from secretariat officials on the latest political developments. He then held a meeting with deputy secretaries-general to evaluate priorities and working methods for the upcoming period.
After assuming office, Fahmi sent thank-you letters to Arab leaders for their confidence in him. He also sent official letters to foreign ministers containing his proposals for overcoming current challenges in the region, reforming the Arab League, and strengthening economic and social development efforts.
9th Secretary-General
Nabil Fahmi became the ninth Secretary-General of the Arab League, which was founded in 1945, and the eighth Egyptian to hold the post. In the League's history, secretaries-general have always been Egyptian nationals, except for the period when the headquarters was moved from Cairo to Tunis in 1979 after then-Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed a peace treaty with Israel.
Fahmi served as Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs from June 2013 to July 2014. Previously, he served as ambassador to Washington from 1999 to 2008 and to Tokyo from 1997 to 1999.
Nabil Fahmi's father, Ismail Fahmi, also served as Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Anwar Sadat from 1973 to 1977.
The Arab League Council had elected Nabil Fahmi to this post for a five-year term during its meeting on June 22.
