Oman's official news agency announced that the country's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment was carried out with the tanker 'Muscat'. The agency stated that this step strengthens Oman's position in global energy supply chains.
According to maritime data compiled by Al Jazeera's open-source monitoring unit, the tanker 'Muscat' (IMO number 9992880) departed from Oman's Qalhat Port. However, no notification has been made regarding the vessel's port of destination.
Destination may be announced later
Qalhat Port is known as one of the main hubs for Oman's LNG exports and hosts contracted shipments of Oman LNG company. Tracking data shows that it is common for some LNG tankers to disclose their route during the voyage or when approaching the delivery area.
The vessel's ownership records reveal that the tanker belongs to Oman Shipping Co SAOC OSC, which is part of Oman's maritime transport system.
CEO's 'we are ready' message
Speaking to an Omani newspaper, Oman LNG Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hamad bin Mohammed Al Numani said that the departure of 'Muscat' confirms that the country's integrated energy system is ready to meet global LNG demand.
Al Numani stated, "This operation increases the efficiency and sustainability of our maritime transport services."
Second vessel to arrive in July
The company is expected to take delivery of its second LNG tanker in July as part of its plan to integrate the energy value chain. This move is expected to support the goals of Oman Vision 2040 to diversify the economy and increase added value.
On May 21, Oman LNG held a naming ceremony for two new tankers, 'Muscat LNG' and 'Musandam LNG'. According to the company's statement, the investment fund of the Oman Development Authority holds a 10% stake in each vessel.
