The Palestinian Commission for Prisoners and Released Prisoners announced that Palestinian detainees held in Israel's Megiddo Prison are facing a severe humanitarian crisis due to lack of food and medical care.
In a written statement, the commission said that a lawyer visited the prison and observed conditions described as 'severe'. The statement noted that 20-year-old Muhammad Arafat Sidqi Sawafteh, who has been detained since June 17, 2025, is suffering from joint inflammation, stomach and eye viruses. Sawafteh received treatment for his eye inflammation but still requires a walker.
The commission reported that prisoners are losing weight due to malnutrition. It stressed that the prison administration's practice of transferring prisoners in handcuffs prevents them from signing documents and using phones during legal visits.
The commission also reported a lack of cleaning supplies, irregular shower water (about one hour per day), and yard time that irregularly does not exceed one hour.
According to Palestinian and Israeli human rights reports, there are approximately 9,500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, including 94 women and more than 350 children.
Palestinian institutions state that more than 100 prisoners have died in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023, and that as of the end of June 2026, the identities of 91 have been released. They emphasize that prisoners are struggling with starvation, medical neglect, assault, isolation, lack of hygiene supplies, and widespread scabies.
Since the start of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, the army and settlers have intensified attacks in the West Bank, where official Palestinian data records more than 1,182 Palestinians killed, around 13,000 injured, and nearly 24,000 detained.
