Video of pale, pink-tinged dolphins swimming close to shore near Qantab in Muscat and surfacing several times has drawn wide attention. The sighting reportedly took place on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026.
The species has not been confirmed. Omani expert Abbas Al Zadjali wrote in the newspaper Al Shabiba that the animals in the original video more closely resemble Risso's dolphins, though identifying them from a distant recording still needs confirmation by specialists.
Why pink?

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Risso's dolphins can turn pale grey or almost white as they age. Other explanations include pigmentation, visible blood vessels or lighting effects.
Al Zadjali noted that some versions of the circulating video included separate footage of pink humpback dolphins filmed in Thailand, which should not be treated as evidence of the species seen in Oman. The video in this report includes only the Omani footage.
Oman's waters are home to about 20 species of whales and dolphins, and dolphin activity in the Gulf of Oman peaks between October and May.
