Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said no one would be allowed to tamper with the constitution approved by the people. “The country has a constitution that the people approved for the state. No one will touch it,” Sisi said.
Sisi made the remarks on Oct. 14 at the 44th cultural seminar held by the Egyptian Armed Forces to mark the 53rd anniversary of the October 1973 War. In the same speech, he also responded to remarks by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich about the Sinai Peninsula.

“Protect your country, not the president”
Referring to rumors spread in recent months and attempts to incite public opinion, Sisi said such efforts were part of attempts to destabilize the country and stir unrest. He said deliberate attempts to distort public awareness could heighten tensions and weaken the state from within, adding that state institutions and society share responsibility for countering such campaigns.
Calling on Egyptians of all ages to stay committed to their country, Sisi said: “Protect your country from this conspiracy. I am not telling you to protect the president.” He stressed that protecting the state comes before protecting any individual.

Claims of a 2027 constitutional amendment
Sisi’s remarks came after claims surfaced that the constitution could be amended in 2027, a change that could open the way for him to run for another term.
A 2019 amendment to Egypt’s constitution extended the presidential term from four to six years and allowed Sisi to run for a third term. Under the current rules, Sisi cannot run again after his third term ends in 2030.

Reminder of 2011 and 2013
Sisi recalled that Egypt went through difficult periods in 2011 and 2013 that threatened the stability of the state and the continuity of its institutions. He warned that any new unrest of that kind would have serious consequences for the country’s stability and its capacity to withstand challenges.
Popular protests in January 2011 ended with the departure of then-President Hosni Mubarak. In July 2013, the army removed Mohamed Morsi from office. Sisi became president after winning the 2014 election and was re-elected in 2018 and 2023.
