The 22nd Brigade of the Gorgor Special Forces, part of the Somali National Army’s ground forces, has completed an advanced military training program in Türkiye, the Somali National News Agency (SONNA) announced. The program concluded with an official ceremony at which the Turkish and Somali flags were raised.
SONNA explained that the program aimed to strengthen the unit’s military skills and operational capabilities. The 22nd Brigade became the second ground forces brigade to complete a full training program as a single unit.
The Somali ground forces seek to take over security sites currently controlled by international peacekeeping forces as they withdraw from the country, with the aim of enabling Somali forces to assume full responsibility for Somalia’s security.
Türkiye has supported the training of the Somali army for years. The Turkish Military Training Command in Mogadishu, known as TURKSOM, opened in 2017 and is one of Türkiye’s largest military facilities abroad. The word “Gorgor” means “eagle” in Somali.
