The Turkish frigate TCG Koksu, carrying out missions in Somalia, marked Turkish Republic Day on October 29, more than 6,000 kilometers from Türkiye.
As part of the celebrations, the frigate sailed off the coast of the capital Mogadishu and saluted the Turkish Embassy there. The footage shows embassy staff and guests watching from the seaside embassy building as the frigate passed alongside a speedboat, while the Turkish flag was raised on the building’s facade.
Turkish naval presence in Somali waters
The presence of Turkish naval vessels in Somali waters comes under the defense and economic cooperation agreement signed by Ankara and Mogadishu in February 2024. The agreement provides for Türkiye to support the protection of Somali territorial waters and contribute to building Somalia’s naval forces.
Koksu is a G-class frigate belonging to the Turkish Naval Forces. Türkiye has also operated its largest military training base outside its borders in Mogadishu since 2017, where thousands of Somali soldiers receive military training.
The Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu had marked the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic and thanked the Somali presidency for its congratulations, affirming its pride in the close friendship between the two countries.
