South Korea has expressed its approval of the ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran, which aims to end months of conflict. The Seoul administration also hopes for the safe navigation of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to be restored.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Park Il stated that the government views the agreement and the significant progress toward restoring stability and peace in the region positively. Park also praised the leadership of US President Donald Trump and the diplomatic efforts of the involved parties and countries in reaching the agreement.
Seoul expects the vessels affected by the situation in the strait to be able to resume safe movement soon. According to the statement, among these vessels are 24 linked to South Korea.
South Korea emphasized its continued participation alongside the international community in efforts to ensure freedom of maritime navigation in this vital waterway. The country is closely monitoring developments in the Strait of Hormuz due to its importance for energy and trade transportation.
It was reported that 137 South Korean sailors remain in the region. These individuals stayed after Iran blocked passage through the strategic waterway following US-Israel attacks at the end of February.
Earlier, Trump had stated that Washington and Tehran had reached a peace agreement and indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the signing of the agreement this week.
