A Nazi symbol, the swastika, was found on the wall of a mosque in Brussels’ Laeken district. The symbol was noticed at around 1 a.m. local time on Saturday night.
Ahmed Laaouej, Brussels’ Minister for Local Government and Equal Opportunities, said the incident was an Islamophobic act. Laaouej said the presence of a Nazi symbol at a mosque was particularly serious and stressed that those responsible must be identified.
After the incident was reported to police, preparations began for an official report. Authorities will investigate to identify those responsible for drawing the swastika.
Ahmed Laaouej visited the mosque with Khalid Zian, a Brussels city councillor responsible for religious affairs. The two officials expressed solidarity with the mosque’s community and worshippers.
