Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli army was preparing to take control of the Ali al-Tahir ridge in southern Lebanon. In a statement on Sunday, Katz said anyone approaching the area would be eliminated.
Katz claimed that Israeli forces had killed Hezbollah members and destroyed tunnels in the area. The Israeli defense minister said they were preparing to prevent Hezbollah or any other party from reestablishing a presence there.
The “yellow line” in southern Lebanon
The Ali al-Tahir ridge lies within the declared “security zone” that Israel calls the “yellow line” and that covers an area of approximately 700 square kilometers inside Lebanese territory.
Katz said Israel would not withdraw from the area or redeploy its forces until Hezbollah was disarmed across Lebanon. Lebanese authorities and Hezbollah did not immediately comment on the statements.
Military activity at the Ali al-Tahir ridge
The Israeli army said on Thursday that it had carried out a major explosion at the Ali al-Tahir ridge. According to the army, the explosion destroyed a Hezbollah tunnel network stretching over more than two kilometers, along with other infrastructure.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later described the Ali al-Tahir ridge as “the largest Iranian site outside Iran.” Located north of the Litani River, between Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the ridge has strategic importance because of its commanding position over large parts of southern Lebanon.
Earlier this month, Netanyahu claimed that Israeli forces had completed their “clearing” operations in the area. Israeli forces remain present in areas of southern Lebanon they have held for decades, as well as in areas seized during recent wars and military operations.
Casualties from the attacks in Lebanon
According to official Lebanese figures, approximately 4,400 people have been killed and 12,500 injured in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2.
