U.S. President Donald Trump and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed held a phone call as disagreements between the United States and Iran over the security of the Strait of Hormuz intensified.
During Tuesday's call, the two sides assessed various aspects of cooperation between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Trump and Mohamed bin Zayed discussed ways to strengthen areas of cooperation that would serve the mutual interests of the two countries.
The two sides also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East and efforts related to them.
Security dispute in the Strait of Hormuz
The United States and the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding on the Strait of Hormuz on June 18. Implementation of the process, which was intended to prepare for a final agreement, was disrupted by differences over the strait's security.
Tensions around Iran and transit corridors
The United States and Israel began attacks against Iran on February 28. Iran responded by targeting Israel as well as U.S. bases and positions in the region. The sides later reached a ceasefire agreement in April.
The United States resumed its attacks against Iran between July 8 and 24, while Iran targeted U.S. military facilities and equipment in Arab countries. Following these developments, talks resumed on secure transit corridors for ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
