Tunisia's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has decided to allocate scholarships for Syrian students who will study at Tunisian universities during the 2026-27 academic year.
Tunisia's embassy in Syria announced that the program will cover students pursuing studies in various academic fields. Applications will be processed in line with the established requirements and schedule.
The selection of students who will benefit from the scholarships will be the sole responsibility of the Syrian authorities.
Tunisia and Syria restore relations
The scholarship decision came after diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored. Tunisia and Syria re-established diplomatic contacts in April 2023, after relations were severed in 2012, and decided to reopen their diplomatic missions and appoint ambassadors.
Tunisia severed diplomatic relations with Damascus in February 2012 under then-President Moncef Marzouki and closed its embassy in Syria. The decision was taken in response to the Syrian authorities' handling of the popular protests at the time.
