Turkish contracting firms are ready and waiting to take an active role in reconstruction projects in Syria and Ukraine, countries heavily damaged by war. Erdal Eren, President of the Turkish Contractors Association, stated that Turkish firms have seen the scale of destruction in these countries and wish to contribute with their international experience.
Message of cooperation for Syria
Eren expressed that Syria has suffered widespread destruction due to years of war and needs large-scale reconstruction efforts. He relayed that about two months ago at a joint forum in Istanbul, Syria's Minister of Economy and Industry, Muhammad Nedal al-Shaar, conveyed to him his desire for Turkish firms to take an active role in the country's reconstruction.
Eren added that there has recently been a focus on establishing new collaborations between Turkey and Syria in many areas such as industry, transportation, energy, and trade.
Awaiting the end of war in Ukraine
Regarding Ukraine, Eren emphasized that the end of the Russia-Ukraine war will open a wide door for Turkish firms in reconstruction projects. Stating that based on current political indicators they expect the war to end this year, Eren said, "When this happens, we anticipate that the Ukrainian side, drawing from our history of joint cooperation, will invite us to participate in most of the reconstruction projects."
He also noted that some Turkish contracting firms continue their operations in Ukraine despite the war conditions and are contributing to the reconstruction of bridges and facilities damaged by the conflict.
Digital transformation and international markets
Eren said the sector continues to expand its international business despite current geopolitical challenges. He stated that digitalization, artificial intelligence, and modern production technologies are beginning to take a strong place in the construction sector.
Eren noted that Turkish contractors continue to diversify their overseas markets while the Russia-Ukraine war and conflicts in the Middle East persist, adding that in recent years Turkish firms have successfully expanded towards Balkan and Eastern European markets and have carried out various projects in many European countries.
A mission beyond economics
Eren stressed that the presence of Turkish firms in foreign markets is not only an economic dimension. He said these activities also strengthen humanitarian relations between peoples. Eren stated, "We want to build not only bridges between shores, but also bridges between hearts, peoples, and countries. This is one of our most important characteristics."
