Turkish adventurers Onur Çağlar and Halil Özal have embarked on a challenging canoe journey from Istanbul to the Syrian border, aiming to promote water sports culture among young people.
The duo managed to cross the Sea of Marmara despite waves and harsh weather, reaching the Dardanelles and arriving in the province of Çanakkale in western Turkey.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Onur Çağlar said their final destination would be Hatay on the Syrian border. Noting that even European countries without a coastline have many water sports athletes, Çağlar stated that he aimed to set an example for young people through this initiative.
Halil Özal, a former air force non-commissioned officer, said he has been interested in water sports for many years. Özal stated that he bought his first canoe 13 or 14 years ago and started preparing for this initiative a year ago.
The adventurers noted that weather conditions greatly affect their progress and they paddle between 25 and 30 kilometers per day. They plan to continue their journey by following the Anatolian coast.
