Developments in the Middle East and efforts to promote regional stability were discussed during a phone call on Friday between UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The leaders focused on developing the strategic partnership between the UAE and Russia and opportunities for cooperation that would serve their common interests. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments.
Security and peace in the Middle East
The call addressed developments in the Middle East as well as efforts to strengthen security, stability and peace in the region.
The phone call took place as initiatives to resolve disputes between the United States and Iran through diplomatic means continued. In this context, arrangements concerning maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz were among the prominent topics.
Seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz
Washington and Tehran reached an agreement on June 14, mediated by Pakistan, providing for the release of frozen Iranian assets in exchange for reopening the strait. Disputes over the implementation of the agreement increased tensions again, while Iran restricted maritime traffic.
Military clashes between the parties began on July 8 and lasted for approximately two weeks. Following the clashes, Iran resumed talks with Oman on safe passage routes for ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
