Yair Golan, leader of Israel’s Democrats Party, filed a defamation and damages lawsuit seeking 2.055 million shekels, approximately $843,000, against Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Golan’s move came after remarks by Sara Netanyahu implying that he had advance knowledge of the surprise attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Golan also sent Netanyahu a formal legal notice demanding that she retract her remarks and apologize.
Golan accused the Netanyahu family
Golan said the lawsuit was not filed solely to defend his personal reputation, but was also a step against “a government that has completely lost control.”
Golan argued that Benjamin Netanyahu and his family were trying to evade responsibility for the October 7 attack. He alleged that the Netanyahu family was trying to rewrite history and portray as traitors those who saved lives during the attack.
Sara Netanyahu’s remarks on Channel 14
Sara Netanyahu implied in remarks to Israel’s Channel 14 at the end of August that Golan had advance knowledge of the attack. Netanyahu said, “While no one else knew, he was dressed and ready in the area very, very early. Even before the prime minister knew...”
Golan said that he set out toward the south at around 8 a.m. local time on October 7 and took part in rescue operations at the Nova Music Festival site near the Gaza Strip border.
Mutual statements on the October 7 attack
In his defense regarding Hamas’ October 7 attack, Benjamin Netanyahu said, “They did not wake me up.” Netanyahu also targeted former Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Ronen Bar, head of Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency.
A separate investigative report published in the Haaretz newspaper, based on numerous sources and senior officials, alleged that United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had warned Netanyahu before October 7, 2023, that a large-scale attack would be launched from Gaza.
