Six earthquakes struck Kirkuk, Iraq, in less than 24 hours, causing public alarm. The strongest tremor was felt late Friday night, bringing the region's seismic activity back into focus.
The latest earthquake was recorded around 9:30 p.m. on Friday. Iraqi seismology officials have not yet released the official magnitude of this latest tremor, but residents in several Kirkuk neighborhoods felt the shaking, and many were woken from their sleep in the middle of the night.
Geology experts said the successive earthquakes are part of natural tectonic processes, but also pointed out that certain human activities may have increased pressure on existing fault systems. They explained that the area lies in a zone affected by the continuous interaction of the Arabian and Persian tectonic plates.
The movement of the plates loads considerable stress onto local geological faults, which is periodically released in the form of earthquakes. Experts also stated that unscientific or inappropriate oil and natural gas extraction methods may have added to the stress on existing fault lines. However, they stressed that this assessment should be considered alongside the region’s underlying natural tectonic activity and not viewed as the sole cause.
According to data from the General Directorate of Iraqi Seismology, the earlier earthquakes recorded on Friday measured between 3.7 and 3.9 in magnitude. The latest tremor is reported to be stronger than those earlier shocks, although officials have not yet announced its precise magnitude.
This cluster of seismic events in a short period is notable because earthquake swarms can indicate that stress is still migrating underground even after the strongest shock.
Geology experts speaking to Kurdistan24 said additional earthquakes are possible in the coming days. As pressure continues to adjust along the region’s fault systems, they estimate that new tremors within five days could range between 4.0 and 5.0 in magnitude.
Authorities called on the public to remain calm, to rely on official information rather than rumors, and to follow established earthquake safety guidelines in the event of further tremors.
While Friday’s earthquakes caused widespread concern, experts stressed that continuous monitoring is the most effective way to assess the evolving seismic situation. They added that understanding geological forces and public preparedness are vital as experts continue to track activity in the days ahead.
