Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said at a joint news conference with Hakan Fidan in Ankara that the partnership with Türkiye must be strengthened to ensure his country’s security and regional stability.
Al-Shaibani said a united Syria free of terrorism and illegal armed groups would be the most reliable guarantee for protecting the shared border with Türkiye. He said such a Syria would make the greatest possible contribution to the security of neighboring countries, and stressed the need to preserve his country’s territorial integrity and strengthen state institutions.
Economic and strategic partnership
Al-Shaibani said the planned process to establish a high-level strategic cooperation council between Türkiye and Syria was important, adding that the mechanism would address the two countries’ shared agenda and opportunities for cooperation in various fields.
He listed trade and economic relations, along with joint economic projects, among the priority areas. Al-Shaibani said the reentry into force of economic and trade agreements, as well as recent steps taken by the central banks of the two countries, had laid the groundwork for reviving economic and financial contacts.
Referring also to the Türkiye-Syria-Jordan-Saudi Arabia railway project, Al-Shaibani said the line would establish geographical and economic links among the four countries while also contributing to stronger diplomatic relations.
Security coordination
Al-Shaibani said Damascus and Ankara viewed ensuring stability on the ground and combating terrorism as core elements of their bilateral partnership. He announced that steps were being taken to eliminate illegal armed groups as part of efforts to strengthen state authority and institutions in Syria.
Al-Shaibani said Damascus was coordinating with Ankara within the framework of shared national interests. He called on the countries of the region to strengthen security cooperation, military coordination and political coordination.
Developments in southern Syria
Condemning Israel’s ongoing attacks on southern Syria, Al-Shaibani said the attacks targeted Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and posed a threat to regional stability.
Al-Shaibani called for a return to the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement of Forces and urged Israeli forces to withdraw to the positions they held before December 8, 2024. He called on the international community to comply with international law and contribute to preserving stability in Syria and the region.
Al-Shaibani said efforts to ensure stability in northern Syria were continuing, while diplomatic initiatives were also ongoing to end the Israeli attacks in the south.
Israel-Iran conflict
Speaking about the war between Israel and Iran, Al-Shaibani said the conflicts in the region must end as soon as possible. He said the escalation was also negatively affecting Syria and condemned Iran’s attacks on the Gulf countries.
