The UAE’s and Arab world’s first female astronaut, Nura Al Matroushi, called on those preparing for space travel to continue their training and exercises at the International Astronautical Congress held in Antalya.
Speaking at the congress on Wednesday, Al Matroushi said she had spent her life working to develop her skills and aimed to be ready when the opportunity to travel to space arose.
Passion for space began during her school years
Al Matroushi said her dream of becoming an astronaut took shape when she was 5 or 6 years old. She said a teacher’s lessons at school about the Solar System, space, Earth and the Moon helped inspire that dream.
Al Matroushi said that while she was in high school, she watched a documentary about the launch of a Soyuz spacecraft. After learning that one of the astronauts on the journey was a mechanical engineer, she decided to study mechanical engineering.
Not accepted into the first group, selected for the second
Al Matroushi applied to the UAE Astronaut Programme in 2017 and said she was not accepted into the first group. She said she was selected when she reapplied for the second group.

Al Matroushi said she had remained determined to realize her dream and continued developing her skills so she would be ready when the opportunity arose.
Emphasis on collaboration in space
Al Matroushi said teamwork, open-mindedness and a desire for continuous learning were among the most important qualities for astronauts. She said space exploration required cooperation among countries and all of humanity.
Al Matroushi said she was pleased to attend the congress in Antalya and that Türkiye’s hosting of the event offered an opportunity to support progress in space, establish new partnerships and deepen relations between the two countries.
The International Astronautical Congress began on Monday and will continue through Friday, October 9. The program includes topics related to the space sector, as well as roundtable meetings, panel sessions, scientific paper presentations and workshops.
