U.S. Ambassador to Ankara Barrack issued a statement on his social media account regarding Israel’s strike on the Abu Zuhur Military Air Base in northern Syria.
Barrack said he did not know why the strike had been carried out and stated that he could share the responses conveyed to him. He relayed the claim that Israel had received intelligence suggesting Türkiye might be transferring a military presence to an air base in Syria and had passed this information to the U.S. administration.
Barrack said he had consulted U.S. intelligence agencies and that the response he received was that the claim in question was untrue.
Statement following the strike
Barrack said there may have been a communication failure between the Israeli military, Mossad and the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasizing that neither the United States nor Türkiye had been informed of the strike.
Barrack described the Turkish military as strong and courageous, saying that it was well equipped and knew its mission well.
Netanyahu’s claim
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Prime Minister’s Office had claimed that Turkish troops were attempting to establish themselves at the base and had deployed military positions advancing southward.
Abu Zuhur base targeted
Israeli military warplanes targeted the abandoned Abu Zuhur Military Air Base east of Idlib province.
A Syrian official said eight strikes had been carried out on the base and that, in addition to the runway, an unused structure in a hangar had also been hit. No information was shared on whether there were fatalities or injuries in the strike.
