Iranian politician Khatami said preserving the agreement between Iran and the United States was important for the country's future.
Speaking in a video address, Khatami said he did not trust the United States and argued that the opportunity created by the memorandum of understanding should not be lost. He noted that Iran would face serious problems if this opportunity were squandered.
Khatami argued that among the documents signed by U.S. presidents since World War II, there was no other text that granted such extensive concessions to the other side.
Khatami, who supports the government of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, said every step taken to lift restrictions on Iran and open the way to the future should be supported.
Khatami said Pezeshkian had signed the agreement with a courageous and self-sacrificing approach, and thanked those who voted in favor of the agreement in the Supreme National Security Council as well as Iran's leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Key provisions of the Iran-U.S. agreement
Iran and the United States announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point agreement, following negotiations conducted through Pakistan, envisioning an end to the war and the resolution of disputes between the parties through talks.
The text, known as the Islamabad Agreement, was signed digitally by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump on June 18 and entered into force.
The text includes provisions on ending the war, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. naval blockade of Iran.
