Omar al-Tayyar Mosque and School in Najd village, southwest of Taiz governorate, was targeted in a bombardment on Thursday, causing heavy damage to the buildings.
Yemen’s Interior Ministry said the bombardment was carried out by the Houthis. The ministry said the mosque and school were struck with various projectiles.
The number of deaths or injuries was not disclosed. The Houthis have not yet commented on the bombardment.
Conflict escalates again in Yemen
The bombardment in Taiz occurred during a period of renewed military tensions in Yemen that began escalating again last July. According to the United Nations, thousands of people were killed or injured during this period, while more than 250,000 were displaced.

Saudi Arabia has led the military coalition supporting Yemen’s government since March 2015. The Houthis have controlled the capital, Sana’a, and numerous governorates since September 2014; the group is alleged to receive support from Iran.
Areas controlled by the parties
The Houthis control Sana’a, Saada, Amran, Dhamar, Hudaydah, Ibb, Al Mahwit and Raymah, as well as parts of Hajjah, Al Bayda, Marib, Al Jawf, Al Dali’ and Taiz governorates.
The Yemeni government and its allies control the interim capital Aden and the governorates of Al Mahrah, Hadramout, Shabwa and Abyan, most of Lahij and Al Dali’, and parts of Taiz, Marib, Al Jawf, Hajjah and Saada.
