United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Egypt on Friday to call for an end to the expanding wars in the Middle East, the protection of civilians and an opportunity for diplomacy to achieve lasting peace.
Speaking at a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Guterres said he would emphasize these messages during his visit to Egypt. Guterres said he hoped lasting peace could be achieved in the Middle East and noted that Egypt plays an important role in defending the rights of Palestinians and addressing regional developments.
Egypt’s regional role
Discussing Egypt’s role, Guterres addressed the situations in Sudan and Libya as well as tensions between the United States and Iran.
The United Nations secretary-general warned that conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories were deteriorating. Guterres said serious restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza continued and noted that the humanitarian situation could worsen further as winter approached.
Risk of attacks and displacement in the West Bank
Guterres said Palestinians in the occupied West Bank faced daily attacks by Israeli settlers. He said the attacks aimed to drive Palestinians from their land and added that journalists and diplomats had also been subjected to attacks.
Commenting on the situation in the West Bank, Guterres said, "The situation is completely out of control."

$450 million needed for Palestinians’ food needs
Guterres said the funding gap for the occupied Palestinian territories was also widening. He announced that $450 million was urgently needed to ensure people in Gaza and the West Bank could access food over the next 6 months.
Guterres said this amount was equivalent to what the world’s armies spend in approximately 90 minutes and stressed the need to provide resources to meet humanitarian needs.
Emphasis on a two-state solution
The United Nations secretary-general stressed that Israel’s occupation must end and that a solution must be found allowing two states to live side by side in peace and security. Guterres also called for the establishment of a credible political process leading to lasting peace.
Following the war that began in Gaza in October 2023, the Israeli army and settlers have intensified attacks on Palestinians and their property in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. These attacks include the killing and detention of Palestinians, the demolition of homes and other structures, the burning of mosques and vehicles, the destruction of agricultural land, preventing farmers from reaching their fields and the displacement of Palestinian communities.
Palestinians warn that these practices could pave the way for the formal annexation of the West Bank and weaken the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state in line with United Nations resolutions.
