Clashes between government forces and the Houthis in Yemen's Taiz province on Tuesday renewed concerns about the country's fragile period of calm. Eight Houthi members were reported killed and 15 people injured in the fighting.
The media center of Yemen's Armed Forces announced in a statement on X on Wednesday that a Houthi attack in the Al-Safa area, located northeast of the Al-Kalabah front southwest of Taiz city, had been repelled.
The statement said the attack was repelled after intense clashes involving various weapons. It added that the Houthis suffered casualties during the fighting and that their equipment was damaged.
The war between Yemen's government forces and the Iran-backed Houthis continued for years after the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country in 2014.
Following the war, in which a Saudi-led coalition supported the government forces, Yemen experienced a relatively calm period beginning in April 2022.
Since the conflict began in Gaza, the Houthis have become involved in regional tensions through attacks targeting Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The resumption of fighting in Yemen has increased concerns that the country could return to a full-scale war.
