At a time when clashes between government forces and the Houthis in Yemen have intensified again in recent weeks, Tariq Saleh, a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, said the Houthis had fired 56 ballistic missiles and 44 drones at districts along the western coast over nearly two weeks.
In a video address released Wednesday, Saleh argued that the Yemen government forces’ use of drones had affected the Houthis’ calculations and plans linked to Iran.
Operations at Al-Mokha Port reportedly halted
According to Saleh’s statement, most of the attacks targeted Al-Mokha Port. He claimed that operations at the port had come to a complete halt and that civilian facilities and port infrastructure had also been damaged.
The Yemeni official claimed that the Houthis had failed to hit their targets and that the attacks had caused destruction and damage only to civilian assets and ports. Saleh said that, in addition to Al-Mokha Port, several facilities had also been damaged.
Saleh says a potential conflict would be decisive
Saleh said the number of missiles and drones used by the Houthis demonstrated the group’s inadequate capacity to retaliate, adding that any battle resulting from a renewed conflict would be decisive.
Saleh said that, in such a process, the capital Sanaa, Hudaydah and state institutions would be brought back under control. He also argued that the Houthis were trying to draw the Yemeni people into the conflict with claims that they were fighting the United States and Israel, and asserted that there was no US or Israeli presence in the country.
Clashes intensify again in Yemen
The war between government forces and the Houthis in Yemen began about 12 years ago. Although a general lull has prevailed between the sides since April 2022, the Houthis have controlled numerous cities and districts, including the capital Sanaa, since September 21, 2014.
Clashes between government forces and the Houthis have intensified again in recent weeks in several areas, including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhale and Taiz. Yemen’s humanitarian and economic crisis is described as one of the world’s most severe crises.
The Saudi-led coalition supports forces aligned with the Yemeni government. While the Yemeni government accuses the Houthis of receiving support from Iran, the Houthis announced in July that they had imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia.
