Hamas's Prisoners Media Office announced that Palestinian doctor Dr. Abu Safiyya, held in Israeli prisons, was subjected to severe torture. The statement said the doctor's ribs were broken and he faced medical neglect.
The office said Abu Safiyya has been subjected to the most severe torture since his detention on July 27. It noted that the doctor, who was repeatedly attacked in the 'Rakefet' section of Nitzan Prison, had his ribs broken.
The office reported that despite suffering from heart disease, hypertension, neck pain, a herniated disc, an eye condition and dizziness, the Israeli prison administration only provided sedatives and was medically negligent.
The office recalled that Abu Safiyya also suffered a broken rib when he was subjected to severe beating and ill-treatment during his transfer to the Rakefet section on June 24, 2026. The office also reported that the doctor was held in solitary confinement for 21 days.
Dr. Abu Safiyya was detained in December 2024 during an Israeli army raid on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Israel claimed the hospital was used by Hamas as a command center and alleged that Abu Safiyya was suspected of being a Hamas member.
The Beersheba District Court in Israel ruled on April 28 to extend Abu Safiyya's detention under the 'Unlawful Combatants Law' without any charges being filed.
