Egypt and Belgium played to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup group match. In the game held in Seattle, Egypt took the lead with a goal from Emam Ashour in the first half; Belgium equalized in the second half thanks to the impact of Romelu Lukaku coming on.
Early in the match, the focus was on Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne. De Bruyne attempted a dangerous shot in the seventh minute, but the ball narrowly went wide.
Egypt's first major joy came with Ashour's goal. With a powerful and accurate shot from around the penalty area, Ashour left Thibaut Courtois helpless, sending the ball into the bottom right corner.
This goal marked only the second time in World Cup history that Egypt took the lead in a match. Salah had previously put Egypt ahead against Saudi Arabia in 2018, but that match ended in a 2-1 loss.
Belgium increased their pressure in the second half. De Bruyne's free kick from outside the penalty area hit the post, while Salah also created danger with a header at the other end; Courtois prevented a goal in that moment.
As the match progressed, the game opened up and both teams had clear chances at times. Belgium captain Youri Tielemans also had a powerful volley attempt that narrowly missed.
Rudi Garcia intervened in the match by bringing Lukaku on in the 65th minute. This substitution paid off quickly; after Lukaku pressured following a cross from Thomas Meunier, Mohamed Hany scored an own goal.
Salah was substituted with 15 minutes remaining. Egypt focused on maintaining the score in the final stages, while Belgium pushed for a win but could not break the deadlock.
With the draw, Egypt still has not secured its first World Cup victory. The team, making its fourth tournament appearance, will face Iran and New Zealand in the group stage.
On Belgium's side, the squad featuring Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Romelu Lukaku started the tournament with one point.
