The Iran National Team drew 1-1 with New Zealand in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The game at SoFi Stadium was a fast-paced contest where neither side could maintain the lead.
New Zealand took the lead in the 7th minute with a goal from Elijah Just. After a one-two with Chris Wood inside Iran's penalty area, Just struck a powerful shot into the net.
Iran equalized in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian finished off a scramble in the box. This goal balanced the pressure in the first half.
In the second half, Elijah Just scored again in the 54th minute to put New Zealand ahead once more. However, Iran responded 10 minutes later with a header from Mohammad Mohebbi, assisted by Rezaeian, to level the score again.
With this result, both teams shared their first points in the tournament. Iran is making its seventh appearance in the competition, while New Zealand is participating for the third time.
Iran will face Belgium in Group G on June 21. The team will then play its second group stage match against Egypt five days later.
