Egypt to renew contract of successful national team coach Hossam Hassan
The Egyptian Football Association has decided to renew the contract of coach Hossam Hassan, who led the national team to the 2026 World Cup. The new contract is set to run until the 2030 World Cup.
The Egyptian Football Association has decided to continue with coach Hossam Hassan, who has achieved significant success with the national team. The federation's board has decided to renew Hassan's contract.
A statement from the federation said: "This decision was taken as part of the board's desire to complete the national team's technical project and build on the historic achievements of Egyptian football in the recent period."
Egyptian Football Association President Hani Abu Rida announced that the procedures for the approval and renewal of the contract will be completed at the board's next meeting.
Achievements under Hossam Hassan
The 59-year-old Hossam Hassan took charge of the Egypt national team in February 2024, replacing Portuguese coach Rui Vitória, who was dismissed after an early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt's all-time top scorer, Hassan has recorded 20 wins, 9 draws and 6 defeats in 35 matches as coach. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Hassan's greatest achievement, however, was leading Egypt to the 2026 World Cup after an eight-year absence. The 'Pharaohs' beat New Zealand 3-1 in the tournament to secure their first ever victory at the World Cup finals. In the round of 16, they were eliminated after a 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina.
Contract until the 2030 World Cup
Egyptian media reported that the new contract will be a four-year deal running until the 2030 World Cup finals. The 2030 tournament will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Hassan's previous contract had ended with the conclusion of Egypt's 2026 World Cup campaign.
