US forces carried out airstrikes on Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province. The provincial command of Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that two of its members and one member of the Basij forces were killed in the attacks.
Those killed in the attacks, which targeted various parts of the province in the morning hours, were identified as Revolutionary Guards members Hossein Amuri and Saeed Tokli Zadeh, along with Basij member Mohsen Nejati.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) had earlier announced that it launched air operations against Iran following attacks on three commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
UK Maritime Trade Operations also reported that three oil tankers were attacked in the same strait passage and that minor damage occurred to the vessels.
The Strait of Hormuz region occasionally experiences security tensions due to the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28.
Meanwhile, on June 18, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Washington and Tehran with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar, and tough negotiations are ongoing to reach a final agreement.
