Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to a statement from Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed condemned and rejected the attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Qatari Prime Minister expressed concern over these attacks despite efforts to restore calm in the region. He called on the parties to adhere to dialogue and diplomacy, and to implement the memorandum of understanding signed to strengthen regional security and stability.
Sheikh Mohammed stressed that Qatar supports efforts to de-escalate and reach a comprehensive agreement. He stated that all parties must act responsibly to achieve lasting peace.
This diplomatic contact came amid escalating military tensions between the US and Iran. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire reached with Iran on June 17 had ended, warning of powerful attacks against Iran.
As the US carried its attacks on Iran into a second day on Thursday, Iran announced it had launched missile attacks on US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that US forces struck approximately 90 Iranian military targets.
