FIFA President Gianni Infantino has taken a new step towards expanding the World Cup, football's global summit, to include more countries. Infantino announced that the possibility of expanding the tournament to 64 teams will be opened for discussion in the relevant FIFA committees after the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
Speaking to Switzerland's Blue Sport portal, the FIFA leader explained the rationale behind the expansion idea, saying, 'Every nation should be allowed to dream of participating in the World Cup.' Infantino also assessed the 2026 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico this year and will conclude on July 19.
The FIFA President described the 2026 tournament, in which 48 national teams competed for the first time in history, as 'a tremendous success.' The success of this expansion has paved the way for the idea of a 64-team World Cup to be put on the table.
