“The Friend’s House Is Here,” by Iranian husband-and-wife directors Hossein Keshavarz and Maryam Ataei, screened at the London Film Festival as a tribute to young artists in Tehran’s underground scene working under war and political restrictions.
The film follows two friends and roommates — a playwright and actress who stages unauthorized plays, and a dancer. The directors call it a “love letter” to young Iranian artists.

It was shot secretly over several weeks in September and October 2025 with a small camera and sound gear hidden in a bag. About a week before Sundance, a crew member carried the footage across the Turkish border on a hard drive hidden among footage from a religious film. The film won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance in January and is due for U.S. release on Dec. 4.
