Hugh Williams, a former Google engineer, built a fully functional search engine without writing a single line of code, using an AI-powered coding tool.
According to Business Insider, Williams indexed more than 1.5 million Wikipedia articles with a search engine named "Zeter," developed using Anthropic's "Claude Code" tool.
Advanced Features
The search engine incorporates modern features such as autocomplete, related searches, and AI summaries, which are found in Google and other leading search engines.
Williams said he did not write any code for the project; all programming was carried out by Claude Code. However, he noted that his experience at Google and his contributions to information retrieval system projects in the early 2000s helped him provide the tool with the right instructions.
Williams stated that working with Claude Code resembles "directing" more than programming, and emphasized that AI tools will not replace software developers but will instead assist them in delivering better performance.
Cloud System in 48 Hours
According to a separate report published by Business Insider in August 2025, Williams had previously completed a cloud systems project on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using Claude Code in just 48 hours. The project, which would normally take three weeks, was completed quickly thanks to the AI assistant.
Williams recounted that for that project, he needed to learn a new graph database, but Claude Code sometimes made errors, deleting code from the project or abruptly stopping working during long sessions.
Hugh Williams' Career
A well-known figure in the tech world, Williams was involved in developing infinite scroll technology. Hired by Bill Gates to work on Microsoft's Bing search engine, Williams later moved to eBay before joining Google. He currently develops technical products and advertising technologies for film and streaming platforms at Paramount.
